ABOUT CRITICAL ILLNESS INSURANCE COVERAGE
You can purchase this Optional coverage to protect against the financial strain if you, or your covered spouse and/or dependent child are diagnosed with a covered critical illness. The cash payout depends on:
- The coverage option you elect (see the snapshot for the coverage options available);
- Whether the illness is a covered critical illness; and
- Whether you or your covered spouse or child survive 30 days following the diagnosis date.
The cost of Critical Illness Insurance coverage for you and your spouse is dependent on each of your ages (depending on who’s being covered). The cost for a child is based on a fixed rate.
When you first elect coverage and each year during Annual Enrolment, MyBenefits Online includes the coverage options available and each option’s cost. And, if you’re currently enrolled, the Coverage tile on MyBenefits Online includes the coverage option(s) you’ve elected as well as your current cost(s). Remember, you’re not able to use Flex Credits toward the cost of this coverage.
PROOF OF GOOD HEALTH
If you’re electing coverage for yourself, spouse, and/or child for the first time; proof of good health isn’t required when you elect coverage up to the amounts shown below.
Proof of good health isn’t required
(initial enrolment only)
PRE-EXISTING CONDITIONS
A pre-existing condition exclusion applies. This means that during the first 12 months of coverage, you can’t submit a claim for any condition for which you received treatment during the 12 months leading up to your coverage effective date. This exclusion expires once you’re covered for 12 months.
For more information that’s outlined in the separate Sutton booklet, go to the Resource Library on MyBenefits Online.
EARLY DIAGNOSIS BENEFIT
If you or your covered spouse are diagnosed with one of the following early-stage conditions, you or your spouse receive a partial cash payout:
- Coronary Angioplasty
- Ductal Carcinoma in Situ of the Breast
- Stage A (T1a or T1b) Prostate Cancer
- Stage 1A Malignant Melanoma
The partial cash payout equals 15% of the coverage amount (up to $25,000). This is a lump sum payment, and it doesn’t impact any potential future benefit.
The Sutton booklet includes more detailed information regarding the early diagnosis benefit. It’s posted under the Resource Library on MyBenefits Online.
CANCER RECURRENCE BENEFIT
If you or your covered spouse are diagnosed a subsequent time with life-threatening cancer, you or your spouse receive a subsequent cash payout, provided:
- More than 60 months pass since the previous life-threatening cancer diagnosis; and
- Treatment (direct or indirect) has not been received during that 60-month period (treatment doesn’t include preventative medications or follow-up doctor visits).
In addition, the subsequent diagnosis must be received while coverage is in effect.
The Sutton booklet includes more detailed information regarding the cancer recurrence benefit. It’s posted under the Resource Library on MyBenefits Online.
